History & Milestones

A non-profit corporation which works to bring renewal tocommunities in the city of Chester and Delaware County, DCHC was founded in 2002 and is based in

Chester, PA. The coalition grew from a grass roots mission project organized by Media Presbyterian Church members, who sought to make a difference in nearby Chester by organizing volunteers to complete simple home repairs and neighborhood beautification projects in partnership with Chester residents, churches and agencies.  Today, we fulfill our mission by working closely with many government agencies and community organizations, guided by a board of directors comprised of leaders from urban and suburban churches and area corporations and institutions.

Since 2002, DCHC has:

  • Completed work in a total of eight neighborhoods, helping to bring stability and a sense of hope toChester communities by providing exterior improvements to more than 200 properties. (See summary below.)
  • Provided over 2500 volunteers with opportunities to serve their neighbors, including groups from: Media Presbyterian Church, Grace Bible Fellowship, Delaware Valley Christian Church, Fellowship Church of Glen Mills, Reformation Lutheran, St. John Chrysostom Church, St. Stephen's Episcopal, Harriton High School, Radnor High School, Penncrest High School, Strath Haven High School, The Haverford School, Greater Philadelphia Cares, Prudential Fox & Roach Realtors, State Farm Insurance, Eastern University, and University of Pennsylvania Habitat for Humanity.
  • Purchased a vacant, single family home on McDowell Street, which volunteers are renovating for future sale to a qualified, first-time homebuyer.
  • Developed a pilot program for Fall 2008 which will allow us to expand the services we provide to elderly and disabled neighbors in our area, in partnership with other organizations.
