Our Work
DCHC works in collaboration with city and state officials, communityorganizations and residents of low to moderate income to accomplish home
and neighborhood improvements that will strengthen at-risk communities. Projects range in scope and complexity from
simple to more challenging assignments.
Porches are mended, hand rails are replaced, home exteriors are painted;
debris is removed, trees are planted, new gardens are created. We provide all materials and organize volunteers
to complete this work along side residents. Since our founding in 2002, DCHC
has repaired, painted and landscaped more than 200 homes in eight DCHC serves neighborhoods that have been historically stable but are showing signs of decline due to vacant or failing properties. We distribute information about available assistance to residents and conducts meetings to answer questions and engage residents in the renewal process, then evaluate homes in need of exterior repairs. Once we begin work in a designated community, all services are provided at no cost to residents, although resident participation is required. To get the job done, DCHC mobilizes volunteers from churches, schools, universities and corporations, as well as from the neighborhoods, to participate in Work Days throughout the year. Building urban/suburban relationships goes hand in hand with any project we undertake - volunteers embrace the chance to get to know homeowners as they join together to bring about neighborhood renewal.
